Which sensor or film gate ?

Pick a camera sensor or a film gate, or type your own width and height.

Typing a width and height overwrites the choice above. "verify" next to a size means it comes from a database or is derived, so check the camera or film datasheet.

Which lenses ?

Sorted by type, then brand, then series. Add as many as you like to compare them on the same sensor.

A lens needs an image circle at least as large as the sensor diagonal to avoid vignetting at the corners. Where the circle varies by focal length, the smallest value is used. Grid squares are drawn in millimetres.

"verify" means the figure comes from a forum, a measured database or a statement like "covers full frame", so check the datasheet. "format" means the manufacturer publishes no circle, so the figure is the film or sensor format the lens was designed for (43.3 mm for 35 mm still lenses). The real circle may be a little larger.

Is your lens missing ?

Enter it with the image circle you trust. It stays in your browser, and you can suggest it to the studio for the main list.

Circles come from manufacturers, rental houses and published tests. Lenses with no published figure, such as most Panavision, Lomo OKC, Kowa and Rokinon/Samyang cine glass, are left out. Add them here if you have a number you trust. Sensor sizes are nominal active areas and vary by recording mode.

Lens Coverage Tool

Will this lens cover your sensor? Choose from over 100 camera sensors and film gates, from Super 8 to IMAX 65 mm and from Micro Four Thirds to medium format. Then overlay the image circles of more than 160 cinema and vintage lens series. The overlay is drawn to scale in millimetres, and each lens is marked as covering or vignetting. You can also add your own lens and send it to us for the main list.
